Gestation lasts over a year and mantas give birth to live pups. You could have the giant oceanic manta rays (these), or the reef manta rays. Gill plates or rakers are the bits in their gills used for filter feeding. In recent years a new industry has been created, catching Manta Rays for their gill plates. This is probably the biggest threat to Manta Rays.
